A Working Bibliography of Public Sociology (June’10)

Note: This working bibliogrpahy was compiled in June 2010 as part of the initiative to establish a ‘public sociology’ study group under BSA. The initiative was suspended after I moved back to Taiwan- largely because all the partiners I’d worked with (Joy Canaan, Lucy Mayblin , Michelle Kempson) found it more emergent to focus on aother campaign, the Campaign for Public University, under the pressure brought by the ocntroverial Browne Report and Comprehensive Spending Review. The bibliography was later published on the online magazine The Sociological Imagination (thanks for the invitation by its editor Mark Carrigan). I decide to repost it here for anyone interested in this subject.Apologies if you find some part messy as I did not reedit the content to fit it to the blog post.

BOOKS on Public Sociology

Agger, Ben (2001, 2007). Public Sociology: From Social Facts to Literary Acts. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.

Firsr published before ‘public sociology’ popularized and therefore not written with Burawoy’s conceptualization in mind. This book is a critique of the writing style of professional sociologists (under the scientific aura) which made it inaccessible to the public reader. Ironically, the book itself was criticized by its own extensive use of postmodern terminology.
